CROATIA – TOURIST SAILING TRIPS

Croatia spread by the turquoise Adriatic attracts every year numerous tourists who are enchanted by her tourist values and hospitality shown by the hosts.

Dalmatia is the most often visited region of Croatia, abound in beaches, desert islands, rocky shores and historic towns. This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful European regions.

Dalmatia is called – not without reason – the sailors' paradise: picturesque landscapes, water of crystalline purity, sunny weather for most of the holiday season, proper winds and perfectly prepared infrastructure of marinas make the sailors become willing to see Dalmatia as the destination of their voyages.

We offer you the tourist sailing trips in Croatia on the luxury ELAN Impression yachts (years of manufacture 2005-2007, 3 or 4 double cabins, 2 bathrooms, gas cooker, refrigerator).

It might happen that other type of yacht is chartered for the trip (but still of the similar standard) – other than the presented in our offer, depending on availability of yachts on specific dates.

Our yachts will sail the following route: Sibenik – Trogir – Vis island – Split – Primosten – Skradin – Krka River Waterfalls – Sibenik.

The trip will be started in Sibenik. History of that town dates back to the 11th century. It has remained with Croatians from ancient times, being at the same time the oldest place by Adriatic where Slavs lived. The fact that the town managed to resist influence of both Venetians and Turks was undoubtedly the effect of its interesting location. It is situated by the broads of the rapid mountain river Krka. Deep picturesque gorge surrounds Sibenik from two sides leaving protection of access from the sea side to the narrow St. Anna isthmus. Two mighty fortresses tower over the town, offering view of the panorama of broads, channel and outer islands of Northern Dalmatia. To reach the fortress one has to climb through the old part of the town that is nested on the mountain-side. Narrow streets found between the stone buildings remind some huge stairs. It is nowhere else in Croatia that one can find such an interesting plan of the old town snuggled up to the mountain. Walks taken in the old town are even more pleasant that the wheeled traffic is banned from there. Walking back from the stroll one must not leave out the splendid seaside promenade and the St. Jacob Cathedral found there. The Cathedral comes from the 15th century and is all built from limestone and marble. Even its vaulting and dome are lined with stone tiles. Not a single piece of wood was used in fear of the destructive effects of fire.

Leaving Sibenik we will sail through St. Anna Channel. On our left we will pass the non-conspicuous shelters of Yugoslav Navy. They were cut in the rocky mountain sides. That way the boats could attach unexpectedly the potential enemy. Just where the Channel leaves for the see one is able to see a massive body of the fort that used to protect the narrow entrance to Sibenik. Even though abandoned today it still gives evidence of invincibility of this town.
Now we sail onto the blue waters of Adriatic, set sails and sail between green islands. During the trip our skippers will be glad to share their sailing knowledge with you. The will show how the navigation is done, how the sea charts are read and how the modern electronics is used.

In the afternoon we will reach Trogir. The town is proud of its historic old town with its narrow, romantic streets and conglomeration of historic temples and palaces. Unique beauty and climate of the old town was appreciated so much that it was entered in the UNESCO list of world human heritage. From the marina we are to moor in a view of the charming palm boulevard adjoining the sea shore can be seen with its many small restaurants. It reaches remains of the Venetian fortress walls. One enters the old town through the late-Renaissance 17th-century town gate with the stone sculpture of the Trogir patron saint – blessed Ivan Ursin. With the gate crossed it is easy to get lost in the labyrinth of very narrow streets. Stone buildings make one feel a nice coolness even on the sweltering days. It is worth while to find a small street café and relish the climate of that place at the good Croatian espresso.

Vis island will make another attraction. This is one of those islands of Croatia which are found furthest off shore. Sailing there we will experience the deep-see sailing and have a chance to see that the horizon is truly circular. We will eventually see the rocky shores of the island that is covered by vineyards in almost 30%. The best wine in all Croatia is produced there. But before we moor we will stop at the former navy shelters. They are huge structure cut in the rock, able to house a hundred-meter submarine. Invisible from a far distance they give a tremendous impression when seen close. After a short stop we continue our trip. The town of Vis is located at the spacious bay surrounded at all sides by slopes of the island. Yachts moor at the town palm-lined promenade. Small streets of the old town invite to numerous wine bars where Croatians meet in the evenings to taste a glass of wine.

From Vis we will sail north-east and having cleared Splitska Vrata strait we will arrive at the Dalmatian capital city of Split. It's worth taking a walk through the old town or climb the stairs of the Diokletian palace tower. This palace was built in the 3rd century to commemorate this great emperor. It is an irony that in the later centuries the emperor's mausoleum was transformed into Catholic cathedra as it was Emperor Diokletian who attempted to wipe out Christians. Ruins which are still there these days go well with the palm-lined promenade while the white Egyptian marbles evidence the former glory of the Roman Empire. Split is also proud of its big marketplace where one can buy Croatian home-made products. Citizens come from neighboring islands to sell olive oil, herbs, fruit, cheeses, Parma ham, and local wines and tinctures. Marketplace is open in the morning hours.

The next attraction of our trip will be the picturesque small town of Primosten. Formerly it was situated on an island to become connected with the land through an embankment. We are to stay in a small marina. It offers just a few mooring places at the quay, with the rest of yachts staying at buoys while their crews use pontoons to get ashore. The old town is of a terraced layout with the church and its surrounding graveyard at the island's summit. When seen from that point the sunset makes an amazing expression. In the very center of the town a Croatian old woman sells home-made wine that is bought by cups to be drunk by buyers seated on the benches at the building walls. In the evening, when it becomes cooler, the place is frequented by great numbers of sailors and local people.

Saying goodbye to the sea we will enter again the St. Anna Channel and then the Krka River gorge. Every bend there opens new landscapes to make you feel like discoverers rather than tourists. Through the river meanders we will arrive at a small calm town of Skradin. Most of the tourists who visit that place are sailors and that significantly affected the climate of the town. Found spread along the marina's quays are the local “konobs”, i.e. small restaurants, where one is able to taste local wines or for instance the famous Dalmatian ham called “prsut”.

Facing marina is the landing we are going to leave from on the boat operated by the Krka River National Park, to come close to the waterfalls themselves. This makes a much nicer way to reach the waterfalls – nicer than from the coach parking place found above the waterfalls. You will be able to relish the views of the lush vegetation and reach waterfalls on water.
Boats will leave us close to the Skradinski Buk waterfall. We will go from there by foot, admiring beauty of the water cascades and savoring nice cool that contrasts with the hot and sweltering climate of Croatia. Wooden footbridges were designed for visitors; at places they are found truly close above the flowing water. It is worth while to take swimming suit and take a bath at the bathing place near waterfalls. That will make a nice change after swimming in the very salty waters of Adriatic.

Coming back from waterfalls we will sail downstream Krka River to Sibenik where our trip is to draw to an end.

During our trip you will be free to participate in the free-of-charge preparatory training for ISSA Certificate that allows independent lease and steering of a yacht in many European country. Training will be held by the Skipper, to be possibly terminated in organization of an exam during the closing part of the trip.
